The new rules follow the reworked EU Energy Efficiency Directive and the Agreement on Green Tax Reform for Industry, etc.
Companies that have not previously been subject to the requirements on energy audits must therefore carry out energy audits by 1 August 2025 and climate audits by 1 August 2026.
What are energy management and energy and climate auditing?
Energy management is an integrated company management system (e.g. ISO 50001) that actively manages the company’s energy conditions, ensures that energy is used efficiently, and identifies opportunities to implement energy efficiency and savings.
Energy audits examine and analyse the company’s energy consumption to identify potentials for reducing energy consumption and improving energy efficiency.
Climate audits examine and analyse the company’s carbon emissions to identify carbon reductions, such as switching to alternative, greener fuels.
The new requirements will make companies even more attentive to where they can save energy and possibly switch to new and greener energy sources.
Is your company covered?
The new rules apply to all companies with high energy consumption, i.e. over 10 TJ.
- Companies with an average annual energy consumption of more than 10 TJ in the previous three years must conduct an energy audit every four years.
- Companies with an average annual energy consumption of over 85 TJ in the previous three years must implement certified energy management. An environmental management system (e.g. 14001) supplemented with an energy audit can fulfil the energy management requirement.
- Companies subject to energy management or energy audits must also perform climate audits.
You can read more about the new rules in Executive Order (BEK) no. 761 of 18/06/2024, “Executive Order on mandatory energy management systems and energy and climate audits in certain companies”.
Who can perform energy and climate audits?
Previously, energy audits were carried out by authorised energy audit consultants, but in the future, energy and climate audits must be carried out by authorised companies. Authorisation thus moves from the individual to the company level.
FORCE Certification A/S is approved as an energy and climate auditing company.
