Certification by a Notified Body

FORCE Certification A/S is a Notified Body appointed to perform certification of marine equipment under the Marine Equipment Directive. Our Notified Body identification number is 0200. FORCE Certification A/S is accredited by DANAK, the Danish Accreditation Fund.

We perform conformity assessment under the following modules:

Type examination of the product (Module B)
Quality assurance of the production process (Module D)
Quality assurance of the product (Module E)
Product verification (Module F)
Unit verification (Module G)

Our notification covers several categories of life-saving appliances, firefighting equipment, and devices designed to prevent the passage of flames into tankers. To obtain certification of your product, you must comply with our Certification Requirements.

Marine Equipment – MED

FORCE Certification A/S offers certification of marine equipment in accordance with the Marine Equipment Directive (MED) 2014/90/EU and the latest applicable Implementing Regulation. A type-examination certificate issued by FORCE Certification A/S ensures that your product has the necessary documentation and wheel mark, allowing it to be placed on board EU-registered ships.

Marine equipment such as lifejackets, immersion suits, navigation lights, pilot ladders, devices designed to prevent the passage of flames into tankers (e.g. pressure-vacuum valves), protective gloves for firefighters, and many other products are regulated by the Marine Equipment Directive (2014/90/EU) and the associated Implementing Regulation, which is typically updated every one to two years.

The Directive defines the obligations of manufacturers to ensure the correct design and manufacture of their products. Consequently, wheel-marked products placed on the market are subject to the high standards expected by regulators, shipowners, and end users.

The Certification Process for Marine Equipment

A typical MED certification process includes the following steps:

The manufacturer completes and submits the application form together with all relevant information regarding the product and the manufacturer.
The manufacturer submits the technical documentation required to demonstrate compliance with the applicable product standard(s) specified in the Implementing Regulation. The scope of the required documentation can be developed in cooperation with FORCE Certification A/S, drawing on our experience and expertise.
FORCE Certification A/S reviews the complete technical file and notifies the manufacturer if any information is missing or requires clarification.
Once the technical file has been approved and the manufacturer’s obligations have been demonstrated, FORCE Certification A/S issues a type-examination certificate.
The type-examination certificate is archived in the FORCE Certification A/S database and registered in the EMSA database.
Throughout the validity period of the certificate, the manufacturer must maintain the applicable quality assurance module to ensure ongoing conformity of production and continued product safety.
